Uganda is a perfect fishing destination. Uganda has some of the best fishing spots and experiences that you can imagine in Africa. Nile perch fishing is not only exhilarating, but it also takes you to some of the wildest fishing locations you can dream of.
Fishing is done in both Lake Victoria and in the Nile River at Murchison Falls National Park. Murchison is roughly a 4 hour drive from Kampala. At Murchison Falls, the entire Nile River is forced through a 7m wide gap.
The best time to fish for Perch is when the river levels are low; the fish are more concentrated in the pools. River levels are lowest around March and peak around August; high water levels also leave you with less bank space from which to fish so low water levels are preferred.
You will need a daily fishing license and you can either hire a guide to take you fishing from the bank or hire the park boat.
Fishing from a boat will guarantee you more options at bigger fish. Boat fishing is far more comfortable and recommended for those who are not totally fit to make the climb at the falls.
There is an annual International Game Fish Association (IGFA) competition that is held at Murchison at the end of March which attracts many competitors. Other than the annual competition there is very seldom anyone fishing at Murchison which is a total bliss for those who wish to go for sport fishing at Murchison Falls National Park.
Nile Perch of up to 108 kg have been caught below the falls in Murchison Falls National Park. Other fish you can catch include Tilapia, Tiger fish, ferocious fighter, catfish and barbell.
